The Lab Room Shanty

I was watching a conversation go by on the system administrator mailing
list I read, a conversation about why nulldevice's power supply had gone
kablooie. My friend Doug wrote, in response to a question:

well, theoretically, the introduction of a new, (very) strong EM field in close
proximity could have been enough to push a borderline piece of wire (current carrying
wise) by inducing extra current pushing it over the edge and causing excessive heat
leading to meltdown or perhaps an arc if the insulation was thin in one place.

Something about the phrase "current carrying wise" just struck me. It struck
me as a perfect shanty refrain. So I wrote this. I couldn't help myself.

Give me a borderline piece of wire
Current Carrying Wise
Smoke and sizzle is my desire
Current Carrying Wise

Won't there be a celebration
To behold that vaporation
Here's for the too-thin insulation
Current Carrying Wise

Watch that current boldly arcing
Current Carrying Wise
Here's a perfect night for sparking
Current Carrying Wise

Won't there be a celebration
To behold that conflagration
Here's for the too-thin insulation
Current Carrying Wise

The air is rife with the stench of smelting
Current Carrying Wise
The walls are scorched and the plastic's melting
Current Carrying Wise

Won't there be a celebration
Won't there be incineration
Here's for the too-thin insulation
Current Carrying Wise

Now the boss is sick with sorrow
Current Carrying Wise
We won't be coming in tomorrow
Current Carrying Wise

Won't there be a celebration
Won't there be a long vacation
Here's for the too-thin insulation
Current Carrying Wise
