The DocBot Admin Song

There are some (very very narrow) circles in which I am known as the guy who writes songs about system administration. But I don't really write them -- a very annoying Muse on occasion comes and sings them in my ear, over and over, until I write them down. Usually she just gives me a few lines (and then expects me to fill in the rest).

I had thought the Muse had retired, but alas no, she had just gone on a long vacation. The other day at work I was trying to generate a review document, which involves running something called the "DocBot Admin". There were some problems which couldn't be addressed until the Australian staff arrived (the tool and its maintainer live in Brisbane). While waiting for this to happen, the Eydie Gorme early-sixties hit Blame it on the Bossa Nova kept running through my head. With these words:

I was at my desk, working half the night;
Got a new release, and the deadline's tight.
Tried to build my book for a last review
But nothing changed within the status queue.

Blame it on the DocBot Admin, with its hanging queues.
Blame it on the DocBot Admin, bringing me no news.
Oh it all began with just one little build,
But then my child processes got killed;
Blame it on the DocBot Admin, the Bookbuild Tool.

Now was it the tags?
(No no, the DocBot Admin)
Or a DocBook rule?
(No no, the DocBot Admin)
Or the target flags?
(Yes yes, the DocBot Admin
The BookBuild Tool!)

Now I'm here to say, what I've come to think:
I'd be better off, with a quill and ink.
And when people ask why be such a fool?
I'll tell them all about the DocBot tool.

Blame it on the DocBot Admin, with its hanging queues.
Blame it on the DocBot Admin, bringing me no news.
Oh it all began with just one little build
But then my child processes got killed;
Blame it on the DocBot Admin, the Bookbuild Tool.

Now was it the tags?
(No no, the DocBot Admin)
Or a DocBook rule?
(No no, the DocBot Admin)
Or the target flags?
(Yes yes, the DocBot Admin
The BookBuild Tool!)
