The Triumph of Evil is an Awful Shame

Tonight when my Morris Team dances at the Harry Potter book release party at Birchbark Books the situation may allow for singing a couple of Harry Potter songs I made up at the last book release. Making up songs impromptu can be great fun, although for the most part nothing you write on the spot holds up in the long run in any number of ways. Still, the silliness factor can be high indeed.

In my experience, the most effective improvisational songs are existing songs with slight changes, and a good deal of the humor lies in everybody knowing the original song. Sometimes you only have to change a word or two. This works best among people with a shared songbase, which for me usually means folkies of various stripes. "The Butterbeer Song", for example, is a parody of "Oh Good Ale", which most Morris dancers know.

The other day I posted the word to "The Butterbeer Song". In anticipation of tonight I'm posting the words to the other Harry Potter Impromptu Song, "The Train to Hogwarts". As noted, this doesn't hold up to a critical eye -- which is why I previously have been reluctant to give out the words when asked -- although I have posted a verse or two. This song grows and changes every time you sing it.

All I can say in this song's defense is that children in particular love to shout out when there is an obvious rhyming word in the second line of the couplet. And they also love getting the references. You really don't need to go much further than the first book for inspiration.

This song is a parody of The Rosabella, which begins:

On a Monday morning in the month of May
On a Monday morning in the month of May
I thought I heard the old man say
The Rosabella sails today

I'm going on board the Rosabella
I'm going on board the Rosabella
I'm going on board, right down to board
The saltsea Rosabella

The "Train to Hogwarts" song appeared unbidden in my head as this:

On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
And headed down to Old King's Cross
To board the Train to Hogwarts

I'm going on board the train to Hogwarts
I'm going on board the train to Hogwarts
I'm going on board, right down to board
The magic train to Hogwarts

From there it could not be stopped. Some verses got written that night, some a year later when my young friends Lolo, Smack, and Anna requested verses on specific topics.

So here is the whole song in its current state. Perhaps we'll sing it tonight, and perhaps there will be more verses.

On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
And headed down to Old King's Cross
To board the Train to Hogwarts

I'm going on board the train to Hogwarts
I'm going on board the train to Hogwarts
I'm going on board, right down to board
The magic train to Hogwarts

Additional verses:

It's black and scarlet and so very shiny
It's black and scarlet and so very shiny
I'll sit in a berth right next to Hermione
On board the train to Hogwarts

My Quidditch team it always wins
My Quidditch team it always wins
Sometimes with the help of the Weasley twins
On board the train to Hogwarts

I'm going to the place where I've been before
I'm going to the place where I've been before
I'll have a talk with Dumbledore
On board the train to Hogwarts

I hope this year I will make my escape
I hope this year I will make my escape
From the evil glare of Professor Snape
On board the train to Hogwarts

The triumph of evil is an awful shame
The triumph of evil is an awful shame
And it's all because of WE CAN'T SAY HIS NAME
On board the train to Hogwarts

The Sorting Hat really knows its stuff
The Sorting Hat really knows its stuff
Perhaps it will send me to Hufflepuff
When I arrive at Hogwarts

I told my Maw and I told my Paw
I told my Maw and I told my Paw
I don't want to wind up in Ravenclaw
When I arrive at Hogwarts

The Sorting Hat wears a great big grin
The Sorting Hat wears a great big grin
When it tries to send me to Slytherin
When I arrive at Hogwarts

The Sorting Hat is so very sure
The Sorting Hat is so very sure
That I belong in GRYFFINDOR
When I arrive at Hogwarts

Minerva McGonagal is not so pretty
Minerva McGonagal is not so pretty
But she sure does make an attractive kitty
When I arrive at Hogwarts

I'll climb the mountains and I'll swim the oceans
I'll climb the mountains and I'll swim the oceans
To fiind all the CRAP that I'll need for potions
When I arrive at Hogwarts

On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
On a Monday morning I ignored my boss
And headed down to Old King's Cross
To board the Train to Hogwarts
